ESDM Training:

We provide training to both families and professionals in the ESDM. There is a strong parent training component for all families undertaking our ESDM program. Therapists and professionals can receive training by undertaking our ESDM Introductory and ESDM Advanced Workshops. The ESDM Introductory Workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about the ESDM. Please note that it is very introductory in nature and does not cover direct clinical therapy nor equip attendees to deliver ESDM therapy with children in anyway. The ESDM Advanced Workshop is open to suitably qualified health professionals who meet the requirements set by the MIND Institute and committed to obtaining certification in the ESDM.

ABA Full- service Model:

I’m not sure how my child will cope with a full-program. Can we just start and see how it goes?

Running a full-time early intervention program is large commitment of family time and financial resources. However, early intensive behavioural interventions are what have been shown to work for children with ASD and in a large body of research there is little evidence to suggest that less than 20 hours will result in significant gains. Some children require more than 20 hours to achieve their own individual gains. This is why we, at Best Start, advocate for intensive early intervention as it is what has been shown to work, both in the large body of research and in our clinical experience. Parents often wonder if their child will be tired but children do settle in quite quickly and are often already spending more than 20 hours in childcare, kinder or playgroups. Sessions are balanced to include quite and break times when a child needs them and focus on many daily living skills which do not require high energy. The first term of a program can often be the hardest as a child settles in to a new routine therefore we do not recommend assessing a program’s suitability for your child after one term. Whilst there are no financial commitments to be enrolled in a full-time program for a year, we highly recommend that you are fully commitment to at least a year, usually two, years of therapy before enrolling your child in a full-time program. If you hold strong reservations about a full-time program and would like to “try” before committing, you may like to consider the workshop model instead. Under the workshop model you recruit your own therapists and set your own therapy schedule and load.

ABA Workshop Model:

Recruiting ABA Therapists

ABA therapists or those interested in becoming ABA therapists can often be found by placing advertisements with universities or on Gumtree. The ABIA also keeps a list of people who have recently completed the ABIA’s introductory course. There is higher demand for experienced ABA therapists than supply but if possible we highly recommend trying to recruit at least one experienced therapist to work on your team. Your therapists should have police checks, working with children checks, insurance and their own ABN if you will not be directly providing them with an employment contract.

Training for ABA Therapists:

We recommend that all ABA therapists you employ have received prior introductory training in ABA. The ABIA runs many courses throughout the year covering training at varying levels and topics. We recommend that your therapists continue to receive ongoing training, such as through the ABIA courses. Parents sometimes pay or contribute to therapists initial and ongoing training. We also highly recommend that therapists working on an ABA workshop program supervised by Best Start undertake our ABA Introductory workshop. The ongoing training requirements for your private therapists will depend on their experience and skill in working with your child and delivering the specific programs and also on what you, as the parent, are wanting and willing to provide. We recommend that you provide ongoing training to your private therapists by arranging for regular session and/or video observations of your therapists by your program supervisor.

Can you train my private ABA therapists in the ESDM?

Your private therapists are welcome to enroll in the ESDM Introductory Workshop. Please note that this workshop is very introductory in nature and does not equip attendees to deliver ESDM therapy to a fidelity level.

Cancellation Policy

If you need to cancel a Psychology, Speech Pathology or Occupational Therapy appointment, please provide 48 hours notice so that others may be able to use the appointment time. If you are not able to provide 48 hours notice, full cancellation fees apply.

If your child is enrolled in one of our full-time early intervention programs, there is no cancellation for 1:1 therapy sessions. Similar to being enrolled in a school, childcare or other program, your child’s sessions are exclusively reserved for your child for the term. If your child does not attend for the day, the session will remain unfilled. If your child is unwell and cannot attend a session, make up sessions within the same term will be offered.

For any queries regarding our cancelation policy, please do not hesitate to contact us on 9596 8781.
